The Students' Union is currently recruiting Student Staff- see below for jobs available.
Closing date for receipt of completed applications strictly 12 noon on 15th March, 2010.
SURHUL employs in total around 200 student staff in many different areas of responsibility. Whether you'd like to try your hand behind the bar, drive the non-res bus to get people home at night, or make sure the tech side of life goes without a hitch on a function night, we can provide all the training you need and help supplement your student loan!
    
There are many more positions than these within the Students' Union for you to apply for, below you will find brief descriptions of each role and during recruitment periods, you will also be able to download an application pack. Application forms will also be available from the SU bars.  If you would like further information on any of these roles, then please speak to the relevant department.

Student Staff Positions at SURHUL
 
Cleaning Staff - currently recruiting.
Our cleaning crew help to ensure that any trace of the previous nights antics are cleaned away. You will support our full time cleaner and the venue management team in making sure that the venues are clean and ready for the start of each day. This role is vital in ensuring that we maintain high standards throughout our venues. If you are a team player who is willing to role their sleeves up and get stuck in then we want to hear from you. You must be prepared to work very early mornings as our venues need to be ready by 9am each day.

Catering Staff

 
Our catering outlet is located within T-Dubbs (1st floor of the SU) and is called Bake 'n' Bite. We are now recruiting for additional catering staff to work in this  outlet. This role is customer facing and you will be preparing and serving freshly cooked food such as baguettes, pastries and pies!
 
If you are keen to learn new skills, can be a reliable asset to the team and want to work within this outlet, then we would like to hear from you. Previous experience within catering is not essential as we will provide training, however we do require you to be able to work within a team environment and possess outstanding customer service skills. You must be prepared to work late nights as the venues regularly close at 3am.
You will be required to complete food safety training as part of your induction.

Bars and Venues Staff

 
If you are interested bar work then this is for you.  As a member of the Bars and Venues team you will find yourself working in either of our venues; Medicine and The Stumble Inn or Tommy's and the Union Bar in the main SU building. As a member of Bar Staff you will be customer facing and will get to meet many of the students of Royal Holloway. Duties include serving drinks, preparing food, working the cloakroom and ensuring that the venue is kept clean and tidy as well as being a friendly face for our customers. Experience of bar work is not required as full training will be provided.  You must be prepared to work late nights as the venues regularly close at 3am.
 
You will be required to complete food safety training as part of your induction

Host/Compere

 
 
Can you get a party started? Are you the life and soul of parties you go to? If the answer is yes then we have a job for you.
We are looking for hosts and comperes for our weekly entertainments in Medicine.
If singing is your thing, be our karaoke host and do a couple of numbers yourself before letting the customers destroy some popular songs! If you are more intellectual then how about hosting our pub quiz every Sunday night? Or perhaps you are a ‘hustler’ and fancy running our U.V pool competition every week?
We are looking for people who are confident, outgoing and possibly just a little bit nuts!
 
So if you are up for answering the call, fill out an application and hand it in to SU reception before 12 noon on 15th March.!
 
Events include:
Karaoke, stumble inn pub quiz, rock and roll bingo, the draw, U.V pool competition and other bespoke events that we may run.

Security Staff

As with Bars and Venues Staff, Security work within our two venues on campus. As a member of the security team responsibilities will include helping to ensure that licensing requirements are upheld, such as only permitting members and their guests entry to our venues during the evening, assisting the Venue Manager in ensuring that the building is safe, looking out for the safety of fellow students, assisting in building evacuations in the event of a fire and being a general point of enquiry for students. As with bar work, this role is customer facing during which you will get to meet a wide range of people whilst ensuring you project a positive, professional image to our customers.  Experience is not required as full training will be provided.  You must be prepared to work late nights as the venues regularly close at 3am.
This role requires a committment to undertake the following training
Emergency First Aid (1 day usually a Saturday)
Conflict Management & Physical Intervention (usually Friday, Saturday and Sunday)

Non Res Staff

Non Res staff are the people who get you safely home after a night out partying! If you would like to become part of this essential service, then there will be certain criteria which you will need to meet due to the type of licence required in order to drive a mini bus. We will be looking for good reliable drivers who are able to drive safely and maintain concentration whilst getting people home safely. This service is looked after by our membership services co-ordinator, Lisa Thomas. Training is again provided and you will also be required to pass a minibus driving test before you are employed.  You must be prepared to work late nights as the venues regularly close at 3am, with the Non Res service finishing at 5am
To drive vehicles for the SU and qualify to be put on the vehicle insurance, you must meet the following requirements:
Have a full UK car licence (or a recognised Non-UK equivalent)
  • Must be at least 19 (21 years of age to drive over 9 seats)
  • Must have been driving for at least two years.
  • Must have no points or convictions on their driving licence. 
  • Must have passed a Student’s Union minibus test.

   Tech Crew

The Tech Crew form part of the Entertainments Department, managed by Mark Austin. You will be responsible for ensuring your nights out at the Union are loud and well lit! If you would like to get involved in the technical side of putting on an event then the Tech crew is for you. You can work with sound or lights (and occasionally general décor of the hall) and again experience is not necessary, but the ability to learn quickly and work methodically are important. Having an ear for sound and if you want to do lights a head for heights would be highly advantageous. You will be trained with regular skills sessions and tests. Once you have learnt the basics you will be examined live in the form of a “gremlins test” where you will be required to demonstrate an understanding of the equipment used and how to fault find and problem solve during a full operating function night. Once you have successfully passed, you can move on and become full member of the Tech Crew. Training can last into the second term so a commitment to training is vital. You must be prepared to work late nights as the venues regularly close at 3am.

 Box Office Staff

Box Office staff are also employees of the Entertainments department. Staff in this area are required to sell tickets to function nights to fellow students and be a point of information for up and coming events. You will be responsible for ensuring that tickets are bought by members.

 DJs

The SU employs DJs to work a variety of nights in both Medicine / The Stumble Inn as well as in Tommy's Bar and the Main Union Hall. Whatever your musical tastes are, if you are interested in being a DJ, then please apply.
DJs are expected to have their own catalogue of music. Due to the type of licence held by the SU in order to allow us to play music, all music played must be from the original recording, burnt or copied CDs will not be allowed. You must be prepared to work late nights as the venues regularly close at 3am.

  Duty Manager - SURHUL Bars

 

This position is open to all students at RHUL however we do require that applicants be at a Supervisor level or above from their previous work experience within a similar environment. The suitable applicant will be responsible for looking after the bars when required by the Bars and Venue Manager in order to provide relief cover for the management team. Applicants will need to have good knowledge in licensing law, health and safety, food hygiene and have the confidence required to look after the venue, staff and customers during their shift.  Please return your application form along with a cover letter detailing your suitability for the role.
