 Paul Wrench

As Communications Officer, Paul oversees the ways in which the Union’s events, news, campaigns and general goings-on are communicated effectively to as many students as possible. Whether it is via the website, Facebook, Twitter, posters, Youtube videos, The Orbital magazine or Insanity Radio, Paul makes sure that there is plenty of awareness of the Union’s actions among the student populace. He also chairs the Media & Communications Subcommittee, which constantly reviews the ways in which Union events are advertised in order to create wider awareness and participation.

This week nominations opened for Executive, Media & RAG elections- go get a nomination pack from reception! On Tuesday there was an Inclusion & Representation meeting to discuss our Identity Campaign for next week’s Culture Campaign- check out the Facebook event! We also had Executive Committee meeting and General Meeting. And Wednesday was Come In Your Kit, was amaze!

21.02.10

Since I last blogged I went to Executive Committee meeting, and afterwards the Community Liaison Forum where non-students from the local area moan about student behaviour. Wednesday I helped out with advertising the UCAS Open Day. On Thursday I had a one-to-one with David Cummins where we discussed things we want to accomplish before the end of term and the end of the year, as well as researching Communications Strategies from other SU’s so that we can write our own!

General Meeting on Tuesday 23rd- SU Main Hall- 8pm- ALL SHOULD GO!

Also: Nominations Open for our next elections- if you’re a student next year and fancy being a member of the Executive Committee, or running The Orbital, Insanity Radio or RAG, pick up a nomination pack from SU Reception and ALL the info you need will be in there. There are 19 positions so chances are something will take your interest!

I did not blog last week due to the my participation in the elections disallowing me from doing any Union work, so here’s two-weeks worth of activities!

I attended our Executive Committee meeting and the General Meeting, where we passed the changes to the Executive Committee and our subcommittees ready for the second batch of elections in March- exciting stuff! I also attended a brief Campaigns Subcommittee meeting, had a one-to-one with David Cummins and chaired the Media & Communications Subcommittee where we mostly talked about Insanity’s ambitions for the next few years. Finally, we had the Inclusion & Representation Senate where we talked about Culture Week and I&R’s Identity Campaign! The entire Senate will be out during Culture Week (first week of March), taking pictures of people with signs explaining what their identity means to them, before making a collage of them all in the Alpha Area of the SU. It’s an ambitious idea, but nonetheless a great one!

Finally, now that the Sabbatical elections are over, I’d just like to say a massive congratulations to your NEW Sabbatical team:
Rachel Pearson (President)
Beth Rowley (VPEdWelfare)
Sarah Rahman (VPCommCam)
Victor Garcia (VPSA)
All of whom I’m sure will work very hard next year :-)

Phew! This week has been MANIC as I’ve been helping out with publicising the National Student Survey, a survey about the student experience in general, which ALL finalists must fill in. On top of this, it has been RAG Week and we’ve all been out there with buckets full of money and goodies, and wearing sexy blue t-shirts. On Tuesday we had a LONG Executive Committee meeting discussing the changing roles of the Executive Officers, ready for the General Meeting on Tuesday 2nd February. On Wednesday I spent the day being trained as a Cyber Mentor for the charity BeatBullying which talks to children and teenagers online who are being bullied or generally having a hard time at school- was well fun! Thursday I put up some posters for BeatBullying, and a music event at College, had a one-to-one with David Cummins, and attended Holloway’s Got Talent in the evening.

Hi all! There’s been plenty going on this week (who needs a dissertation?). Monday was Entertainments Subcommittee where we talked about the next Operation Entertainment, intended to be a virtual, online campaign (oooh). Tuesday was the Big Student Debate where students could bring up any issues they wanted to a panel of college and SU reps. Wednesday I was up early helping out with the UCAS Open Day, and then attended Executive Committee meeting in the evening. Thursday was Inclusion and Representation Senate where we talked Culture Week which is in the first week of March and over the week in general I finished re-writing my role for a big constitution review of the officers’ roles coming soon- watch this space!

17.01.10

Hellooooo readers! Hopefully you all had a relaxing Xmas and New Years and did NO work at all (like me).

I forgot to blog my last week of term so here goes:

I attended a Democracy Subcommittee meeting, a Scrutiny & Accountability Subcommittee meeting, and Executive Committee meeting, a Campaigns Subcommittee meeting, helped out at Santa’s Workshop wrapping up presents for disadvantaged kids, had a final 1-2-1 with David Cummins, and drank too much at the Executive Committee Xmas social (standard).

Since coming back this term I have attended another Democracy Subcommittee meeting, an Executive Committee meeting and the first General Meeting of the term where we passed a motion changing the Sabb roles (farewell, CommServ!). We also had an Executive Committee re-fresher training on Wednesday afternoon where we reviewed the effectiveness of the SU last term and what we need to do in the near future. Finally, I helped move some chairs into the Insanity Radio studio and chaired my first Communications Subcommittee meeting of the term.

So lots of meetings, but there are SO many events coming up this term. The Big Student Debate, where College officials will be attending to answer any questions/issues you might have (imagine Question Time for Holloway) on Tuesday 19th January. On top of that, the elections for the four Sabbatical positions (President, VP Education & Welfare, VP Communications & Campaigns and VP Student Activities) will be taking place between the 3rd and 9th February, but nominations open on January 18th (tomorrow!) so if you want to run, go pick up a nomination pack from SU reception. Anyone in their third year with an NUS card can run for a position no matter how much experience or SU knowledge you have!

Anyways, that’s all from me- have a great start to the term peeps!

05.12.09

Hi all! Can’t believe it’s only a week till Xmas holidays start- final year always goes very fast. Anyways, this week has been pretty eventful:

Monday I attended the Entertainments Subcommittee where we discussed the results of the last Operation Entertainment, and a potential Postgrad event. I also quickly did a poster for SHAG Week which was all this week and VERY successful.

Tuesday was our usual Executive Committee Meeting, and also the last General Meeting of the year where my poster board policy was passed (woo!).

Thursday was particularly packed. I had a one-to-one with David in the morning (because I’d missed the last two...oops), as well as the last Communications Subcommittee meeting of the year where we talked poster boards, websites and potential changes to the subcommittee, and also both the Inclusion & Representation and Academic Affairs Senates (I&R was especially productive, as we talked about an Off-Campus Halls Rep, publicising the senate more effectively, and a potential campaign next year).

And that’s it! Just one more blog update from me before the Xmas holidays. Excitement!!!

28.11.09

This week, besides an Executive meeting on Wednesday, has been taken up almost entirely with the launch of the 10:10 campaign- the screening of “The Age of Stupid” in the Windsor Building on Tuesday night. We all campaigned in sexy green t-shirts (in the cold and occasional wet) all day, helped set up in the Windsor Building (green lights, green carpet, green hand prints...), nearly ended up cancelling the event due to badly-timed gas leak, solved the gas leak problem, and became very much enlightened by the film. Check out the 10:10 website to see how you can play a part in the campaign!

21.11.09

This week has seen a great deal of preparation for the launch of the 10:10 campaign (which takes place in the Windsor Building, Tuesday 24th November, 6pm with the screening of the film, The Age of Stupid. Be there or be.....stupid?). I designed, printed off and put up some posters for the launch, and also designed some leaflets to be given out on the day. Check out the Facebook event “Are We the Age of Stupid?” for more info about the campaign and its launch!

I also attended our weekly Executive Committee meeting in which we seconded the new poster board policy which myself and David have written up.

14.11.09

Sometimes being on the Exec is like waiting for a bus- you spend ages with nothing to do and then it all arrives in the space of a week!

Sunday I went for a little Sabb family lunch/bonding session at Harvester with David (VPComserv), Jess (Entertainments) and Alice (Ethics and Environments).

Monday I attended Democracy Subcommittee and reviewed the effectiveness of the recent elections.

Tuesday was a Scrutiny and Accountability meeting where we checked up on each Officer’s blog. We also had our weekly Executive Committee meeting. I unfortunately could not make the General Meeting later on but did make the slideshow for it! I also had a one-to-one with Jess about the next Operation Entertainment on Friday.

Wednesday I made posters for Operation Entertainment on and attended the Campaigns Subcommittee where we discussed the upcoming 10:10 campaign in much more detail (it’s set to be amazing!).

Thursday I had a one-to-one with David, chaired a VERY productive Media & Communications Subcommittee where we made much headway on websites and TV stations. That was followed by two record-breakingly short senates, Academic Affairs and Inclusion & Representation (both 15 minutes).

Friday was the big day for Operation Entertainment- did some surveys for a few hours.

07.11.09

Another quiet week (I say quiet, I was mostly writing essays). I went to the Entertainments Subcommittee on Monday where we discussed the next Operation Entertainment and the possibility of a Foam Party at the Union (watch this space...). Also attended Exec on Wednesday where we discussed potential changes to Regulation F and a Postgraduate Forum. Exciting stuff! (that’s not sarcasm...).

31.10.09

This week’s been a lot less hectic than usual for me what with elections being over, which means I can make a start on my degree.

I attended the Executive Committee Meeting; Made some posters for Give Blood Day; Had a very productive one-to-one with Mr Cummins discussing poster board policies and TV stations; and sold poppies for 3 hours in Englefield Green.

PS: Happy Halloween!!!

24.10.09

Monday I sat on more ballot boxes (whey!)
Tuesday was the day voting closed and I helped out with the vote count in the evening and attended the results announcement.
Thursday I had a one-to-one with David Cummins and discussed exciting things such as the poster board policy and SUTV (watch this space...). I also attended the Inclusion & Representation Senate where we discussed such things as the possibility of a Gender Equality Rep, the role of the Ethnicity Rep and Give Blood Because We Can’t Campaign (check out the Facebook event!). And we had the Academic Affairs Senate where we discussed issues to do with Academic Criteria (i.e. do students know what is expected of them and if not, how can this be improved?).

17.10.09

Monday I attended the Democracy Subcommittee where we discussed arrangements for the upcoming elections for First Year Rep, RAG Vice Chair and NUS Delegates- check out the “Elections” section of the website for more details about candidates and how you can vote.

Tuesday I attended Scrutiny & Accountability Subcommittee which makes sure all elected officers are doing their jobs and had a look everyone’s manifestoes from the last elections. We also had an Executive Committee meeting and our second General Meeting of the year where many more Senate and Subcommittee positions were elected.

Wednesday was the day the ballot boxes opened and election campaigning began. I sat on ballot boxes for a few hours, filmed the candidates’ election videos (search “SURHULtube” in Youtube to find them) and attended the Campaigns Subcommittee where we discussed upcoming events such as the 10:10 Campaign and Culture Campaign (watch this space...).

Thursday involved more sitting at ballot boxes and also Candidate Question Time in the evening where the candidates all gave their speeches and answered questions from the audience.

And finally, Friday I sat on more ballot boxes and broke my laptop. Good times.

10.10.09

Another very busy but very exciting week:

Sunday I was up at the crack of dawn and outside the SU at 7:30am and went to Virginia Water to film and photograph various sports clubs participating in Bootcamp so well done to all the participants (I couldn’t have done it!).

Monday I attended the Entertainments Subcommittee in which we organised the first Operation Entertainment of the year for Friday. Later on I made the Operation Entertainment Facebook group (everybody join!). We also had the first ever Inclusion and Representation Senate which was also very productive.

Tuesday I attended our weekly Executive Committee Meeting.

Wednesday had a one-to-one with David Cummins (VPComServ) to discuss my first Media & Communications subcommittee meeting the next day.

Thursday I chaired my first subcommittee meeting and discussed plans for the year. We reviewed Union publications such as the wall-planner, the Guide Book and the What’s On Card to see how they can be improved for next year. We also set up rotas to keep the website updated with news and the poster boards well-presented.

Friday I helped out with Operation Entertainment by getting students to take surveys on Union nights.

03.10.09

Monday: Put up posters for the Senate and Subcommittee elections on Thursday, and also posters advertising the nominations being opened for First Year Rep, Rag Vice Chair and NUS Delegates (collect a nomination pack from reception or email president@su.rhul.ac.uk for more info if you’re interested in running!).
Tuesday: Attended our first Executive meeting of the year.
Wednesday: Met up with David Cummins (VPComServ) to discuss future plans for the Media & Communications Subcommittee this year.
Thursday: Attended the Senate and Subcommittee elections- there were 4 student representative positions on my subcommittee and ALL got filled up (WOOP) so congrats to Adelana, Becca, Jimmy and Lester! Also congrats to everyone else who gained positions!

.....and that’s it for this week. Tomorrow morning I’m taking pictures and filming the sports Boot Camp at Virginia Water and next week will also be my first subcommittee meeting. Exciting stuff!

26.09.09

Phew! So I’ve finally recovered from a MANIC Freshers Week and had my first lie-in in about 12 days.

During the past week I:
Helped some Founders Freshers move their stuff in.
Directed lost people
Gave out NUS cards
Controlled queues for Meds and the Union
Gave out more NUS cards
Went to some Welcome Talks with the ComServ Sabb family
Wrote something for Orbital Live
Went on Insanity V (and ate cold, dirty pizza)
Gave out even more NUS cards
Stood on the SU stall at Freshers’ Fayre
Helped advertise Operation Entertainment
Gave out a few more NUS cards

So all in all, a very busy but also quite awesome week. On Thursday we have the elections for all the subcommittees and senates so come along and vote or run for a position- there’s loads of them and they all need to be filled! For more info, email president@su.rhul.ac.uk.

Hope to see you all there!

15.09.09

Hello all!

So it’s the second day of Exec training, it’s raining, and I’m doing my first (ever) blog. Dead excited about the Freshers arriving (please PLEASE don’t rain!), bloody proud of my Welcome Freshers 2009 video (see Youtube) despite a string of technological problems and just glad to be back for my final year.

 Updates sooooon!
