Hi, everyone, I am very excited to write my blog for the SU and RHUL Postgraduate students everywhere! Of course, like everyone else, I have been swamped with work for my course, but I have still had time to do many exciting things with the aid of the Student’s Union to improve Education and Welfare for Postgraduates across campus.

I have attended a very important meeting together with Charlotte Bassam Bowles, College Learning, Teaching and Quality Committee. Here, important issues were discussed, such as improving the Graduate Careers Service, e-thesis submissions, National Students Survey, College Student Feedback Questionnaires. The good news for Postgraduate students! It was suggested in the meeting that an interim ceremony might be possible for PGT students who had to wait nearly a year after completing their programme!!

Research skills Programme (RSP) is required to attend for research students. It was discussed during the meeting. Now there were various levels of academic writing skills courses offered to research students, with 5 new courses on offer which were available to all students. Then research students can have sufficient research skills training during the year and make satisfactory progress at the Annual Review. And another issue discussed in the meeting is about deans to liaise between departments and Students’ Union to iron out problems with getting names of student SSC reps.

I also attended the society's Ball last week, there were many awards during the ball. It was very fun!!

Look forward to writing next week; feel free to email me with any Postgraduate problems!

        2nd February 2010 Blog
·        RAG
·        National Student Survey
·        UCAS

Hi again all you Holloway Postgrads. Unless you’ve been living in a hole, you cannot have failed to notice all the RAG hoohah going on across campus recently. RAG (from 'Raise and Give') is a week when students raise money for charity. As well as attending the AMAZING “Be a Hero” RAG night at the SU last Friday 29th January; I also helped raise money for RAG outside the Windsor building. I would personally like to congratulate all those hard working RAG volunteers who helped make last week possible and raised so much money for good causes.

I was again campaigning outside the Windsor building last Thursday, but this time in an effort to publicise the National Student Survey to all the final year Undergraduates across campus. NSS is an independent survey providing an opportunity for 3rd year undergraduates to share feedback on their academic experience, with the results being made available to help future students choose what and where they would like to study.

I was also able to contribute my two cents to future students thinking of studying at Royal Holloway by representing our dear old SU during a UCAS Open Day last Wednesday. Here, once again in the Windsor building, I was able to answer questions posed by both prospective students and their doting parents about the SU, Student Activities, and all the support and help the SU gives its members. I didn’t realise how much the SU does for students till I started explaining it during the UCAS Open Day!

That’s all from me, until next time J

Blog for the 26th January 2010

Hi everyone! Once again it has been busy, with loads of interesting stuff relevant to Postgraduate students across Campus to keep me occupied!

The 13th January I attended the first Graduate School Forum this term, which focused on integrating Research Postgraduates into the college research environment. Further discussion of the E-Thesis proposal was also carried out. It will help the postgraduate students’ theses to be downloaded from the library website. And the E-Thesis will be noticed by the publisher.

Also discussed were the results of the Student Feedback Questionnaire, and the College is now working towards providing greater levels of anonymity for any Post grads who worried about participating in the Questionnaire. The results were very revealing and quite surprising too!

In a similar vein, last week attended the fantastic Big Student Debate on the 20th January, with attendance from the principle of the college, head of departments, head of schools, and Charlotte Bassam-Bowles, our VP of Education and Welfare. It was a fascinating debate, and many interesting and thought-provoking points were raised by those who attended.

That’s all for this blog, can’t wait to share my work with you again soon!

Hi, everyone, it’s great to once again be able to post my blog for the SU and RHUL Postgraduate students. Only 2 weeks before Christmas Holiday! I know everyone is busy with examinations and essays, and I hope everyone passes their exams and submits their essays smoothly.

I am very excited to share my week with everyone here. I attended the College Graduate School Forum, which is a very important meeting to discuss vital postgraduate issues.  The meeting announced Academic Writing Support for international students and workshop for post graduates. It also discussed ‘Travel Awards’, ‘Guidelines for Students with Learning Difficulties’, ‘Regulations on Assessment’ and the ‘Student Feedback Questionnaire’, which discussed key issues that relate closely to postgraduate interests.

During this week, I also worked in SU main Hall on Accommodation Day! I worked with our Welfare Advisor Tina and college accommodation officers, and our lovely staff from Egham police Station, as well as the Accommodation officer from the University of London. The objective of the Accommodation Day is to help students find private housing off-campus, and provides a lot of really useful information. For example, how to deal with a signed contract that only covers the landlords’ interests and ignores students’ benefits, and how to find private housing which has Runnemede Council accreditation, how to deal with the landlord, and how to find out what the landlords’ responsibilities actually are.  All are very important information for students who live outside of campus. The day was very fun. Many students went to the accommodation Day. We also had lovely prizes for   everyone who turned up! One student won a kettle, whilst another won some wine cups! It was very fun!

I know most postgraduates will go back with their family to celebrate the Christmas! I wish everyone a Fabulous Christmas!

Merry Christmas!! Happy New Year!!

See you all next year!

1st/December/2009

Hi, everyone, I am very excited to write my first ever blog for the SU and RHUL Postgraduate students everywhere!

Of course, like everyone else, I have been swamped with work for my course, but I have still had time to do many exciting things with the aid of the Student’s Union to improve Education and Welfare for Postgraduates across campus.

I am very happy to announce the passing of a motion at the last SU General Meeting to implement a SU-run Postgraduate subcommittee and Forum. It is the first time that our postgraduates have our own Postgraduate subcommittee and Forum in SU. Now Postgraduates can raise issues concerning their courses, their lives and their student experience not just with me, but with their new faculty-specific Postgraduate sub-committee members, or even raise important issues themselves if they so wish. It also gives all us Postgraduates a chance to organise some events, either academic or social, to help us on our courses or just let off some steam.  Barbecue anyone?

Writing a whole motion and appendix together with our lovely Charlotte Bassam Bowles( VP Education and Welfare!), Charlotte gave me loads of help and support for establishing our postgraduate forum, I really appreciate it! Our SU union chair Mogan Hamilton-Griffin, he gave me a lot of help too! All our exec members voted and totally supported our postgraduate Forum Motion in last Exec meeting and last General meeting! Thank you all our Exec members!

I have attended a very important meeting together with Charlotte Bassam Bowles, College Learning, Teaching and Quality Committee. Here, important issues were discussed, such as improving the Graduate Careers Service, e-thesis submissions which will begin October 2010 and the new Course Representative System, etc.

This week I represented Postgraduate students at the 10/10 Campaign launch night. The threat of global warming, although seemingly far-off, is ever present in our lives and it is up to us to do something about it! I was very pleased to be a small part of this potentially world-changing campaign, and I am sure we will see many more events across campus concerning a greener future as we approach the 10/10 deadline!

I still had time to help give out Questionnaires for Operation Entertainment, it was very fun!!

Look forward to writing next week; feel free to email me with any Postgraduate problems! My email address is postgraduate@su.rhul.ac.uk
