Thursday 8th October!

Hey everyone! Sorry it's taken so long to update this blog! Had an amazing Fresher's Week, bet most of you saw me around! I was helping on the NUS card tents for much of the week, helped move in a lot of international and home students, attended the first General Meeting, ran around a lot in the week before Fresher's with a whole load of Exec and volunteers packing and delivering those bags packed with goodies, calenders and guidebooks to every flat kitchen/pantry on campus and Kingswood! There were also a lot of fun BBQs some outside the SU where you could meet Charlotte and your Welfare team, some for those of you moving into halls in the Founder's Quad or outside Stumble , so i ended up eating burgers all week =]! Since then, unfortunatleyy I was ill for the first teaching week and was quarentined in my room at home, being fed lots of home-made soup, meaning I  missed a few things - which this week I've been trying to catch up with! I attended the Inclusion and Representation Senate which was very productive and attended the second (but my first) exec meeting! I had a meeting with Charlotte yesterday where we outlined my action plan for the year and are in the process of getting everything off the ground including planning the next Academic Affairs Senate (the first one had to be cancelled due to me being bed-bound!)! Exciting times! Operation Entertainment starts tomorrow, 11-4pm at Bake and Bite, soo  please attend! It's your chance to gve feedback on SU nights and other entertainments and have a good chinwag with your Entertainments team! Hope to see you all there!

Monday 16th November!

Again sorry for the huge gap in blogs!! Been up to quite a bit since the last blog, including, but not limited tooo - lots of meetings with John Tuck as part of the Student Experience Working Group (watch this space!), meetings with Charlotte, GMs, Exec meetings, helping sell Poppys for the Poppy Appeal, helping organising a Diwali party, holding 2  Acaemic Senates, and preparing for all the Faculty meetings this Wedesday! I promise to blog next week with only a weeks revelations rather than a months! Ciao! x

Tuesday 01 December

WOW its been a busy two weeks! We've had the launch of the amazing 10:10 Campaign and the showing of the eye-opening film, The Age Of Stupid, which was literally stunning. After watching it, I have become somewhat of an eco-warrior, so for anyone that missed it, make sure you watch the film! We're now in S.H.A.G. week, that stands for Sexual Health Awareness and Guidance, hence the fullstops between the letters, no excuses for thinking it meant anything else! Theres going to be lots of stuff going on this week thats really relevant to everyone, so try and get involved! (I also had a 121 with Charlotte and a verrrrrrry long faculty meeting, but they don't particularly warrant as many words as the amazing 10:10 and S.H.A.G. Week!) Hardeep x

Tuesday 07 December

Hi Everyone, I've been a bit of a busy bee this last week with dissertationing but I attended the Exec meeting and the General Meeting last Tuesday, where a new Poster Policy was passed and then Thursday was a party in Meds for all of the Student Staff at the SU, so security, bar staff and all, and its tradition for the Exec to bartend! It was actually a lot of fun, I learnt how to pull a good pint! Also helped out downstairs in Stumble which was also fun though I saw how hard barstaff have to work! Just before bartending, I held an Academic Senate, which was a bit quiet because we haven't got any Course Reps sitting on there yet! I had a 1:2:1 with Charlotte where we talked about an amazing campaign that Bucks SU have been doing and we are looking into (watch this space!) and how to fix the course rep situation! Also talked about getting the most out of the NSS and planned a 1:2:1 with Sarah Rahman and Jess Nevin! Love Hardeep

Monday 14th December

Hello everyone! Its been a bit of a Mish-Mash week, sorting out lots of loose ends before the end of term! I attended Exec which wason Tuesday and on Thursday helped out (very briefly) at the Mince Pies and Mulled Wine event in Gowar Common Room before flitting off the Exec  Social! It was lots of fun and just good to catch up with all the Exec and Sabbs before the end of term and chat about what's going on! After that I've just been thinking about  a possible campaign for next term, time allowing, which could be very exciting, mentioned in my last post also! And i'm here till Wednesday the16th, so myself and charlotte will be working out some Course Rep issues tomorrow and thinking aboutmaking up a training manual for the Rep system, to make sure that it will flow easier in the following years! I also got a very sweet email from the Scrutiny and Accountability eCommittee, which mae my day! Apart from that, I wish everyone an AMAZING Christmas break and a happy New Years too! See everyone when we get back! Love Hardeep x

Friday 22nd January

Happy 2010!!

Hope everyone had a great holiday – I've been back a few weeks and been ultra-busy, so sorry about the late blog! Wow – my first blog this decade!

So over the last two weeks, me and Charlotte have met with the 3 Deans of each faculty and Maire Davies to discuss the Help Us Learn campaign and I must say it went extraordinarily well!We got pretty much almost everything we wanted (as you'll see in a weeks time!!). On a follow up to this, we agreed to attend the Faculty exec meetings to help explain the campaign and what we require department heads to do, so me and Charlotte doddled off to the first one, which was for the Arts Faculty and we have the other two coming up this week! As this little section is so far just on Help Us Learn, I may as well now tell you to look out on Friday 29th January, as we will be launching the campaign (very excitedly) outside Windsor Building! So please please please do make a point of coming along and talking to us, because we have much good news to give you =].

Right, another campaign I've been spending a lot of time working on with Charlotte is the NSS campaign, and for those of you who have no idea what that means, worry not! The National Student Survey, or NSS, is an annual survey for finalist students and the point of it is for you to air all your good points and bad about the university, from accommodation to education, your entire uni experience – and the reason why its so important? Everyone can see the results and if student satisfaction isn't good enough, the uni HAS to act. From last years NSS results, the college has decided to extend library hours (as announced by John Tuck, Head of Library Services at the BIG Student Debate) so it really is important that we all fill it in and have our say! It only takes 5 minutes (I promise!) and all of next week, 25th-29th January, you can fill it out on some nice laptops in Windsor Building, get it out of the way AND have the chance of winning some pretty cool, shiny prizes!

Ok, so apart from a lot of work on these to terrific campaigns, I've been attending Exec meetings, where we chose the Beat Bullying Charity to donate to for RAG Week, a General Meeting where our new Union Chair was elected, had 2x one to ones with Charlotte, attended the hugely successful Big Student Debate, had Exec Re-training and been thinking of ideas for RAG Week, which is also next week, 25th-29th! There's going to be a lot of things going on next week, and RAG is a great way to help out people less fortunate than ourselves, so look out for the events and please do all you can!

Hope you all have a good weekend and please hope for sunshine all of next week!

Hardeep x

Sunday 31st January

Hey Everyone,

Hope you all had a good weekend! I used it to relax and recover after a VERY busy, but productive week!

So last week was the NSS campaign, which was a huge campaign outside Windsor Building mostly, where we were trying to get finalist students to fill in the National Student Survey, with a chance of winning 4 Summer Ball tickets! We had a great turnout from everyone, but if you haven't taken the survey yet, you can still complete it at http://www.thestudentsurvey.com/ and its a great way of communicating you feelings about your university life to the college! So pretty much all of my week was spent campaigning outside Windsor Building, except Wednesday and Friday...

Wednesday was first filled with the last two faculty exec meetings I mentioned in my last blog. Charlotte and myself doddled along to the History and Social Sciences Exec first and just let everyone know exactly what Help Us Learn is and again, got a great reception, with everybody being on board. Then we killed 40 minutes walking around Founders and talking to all the lovely Support And Advisory Service staff before going down the hill to the International Building for the Science Faculty Exec. Again, an amazing reception, with lots of positive comments and lots of general support – some staff even offered to come along to the launch of Help Us Learn on Friday and help us give out flyers!

So then, a little late, I ran off to the SU to get my Cyber-Mentor training! It was a lot of fun, working in groups with other volunteers and the training was really thorough. The group then went to a PC lab and got acquainted with the website, so I'm now a fully trained Cyber-Mentor, whoo!

Cyber-Mentors is a Beat Bullying project, the charity that RAG was raising for this week, during RAG week! A lot of great events went on, including the Slave Auction, which saw its fair share of nudity (but hey, its for charity!) and volunteers, including myself, were outside Windsor Building most of the week collecting money for this great cause =] We'd start the day with light buckets and reach a point where we could barely carry them, no complaints though, all for a good cause, so thanks to everyone that took part and donated!

Friday was the highlight of my week, the day I had been itching to get to. It was finally the day to launch Help Us Learn, so we donned our amazingly informative t-shirts, with the 6 points printed on them, grabbed some flyers and just went crazy! A million questions, 1000 flyers and lots of appreciation from students later – Help Us Learn is out there! The aim of the day was to spread the message, to let everyone know what to expect from their department – Rachel Pearson rather fittingly named it your Bill of Rights – and boy did we do this! I personally flyered the entire of Bedford and Founder's library and the entire team handed out a humongous amount of flyers and explained the campaign to as many students! If you have any questions or feedback on Help Us Learn, or anything at all, I'd love to hear it, so please drop me an email at academicaffairs@su.rhul.ac.uk and much love until next time! Hardeep x

Friday 19th February

Hey Guys,

So over the last week or so, I've been to my first LUAG – that's the Library Users Advisory Group, with Charlotte and our Library Representative, Prasshy. It was a two and a half hour long meeting, so quite a long one, but we got a lot done and discussed lots of issues, including the most effective way to stop people reserving study spaces during exam time, the problem with noise in Bedford Library and the facebook group against the “contraction of Founder's Library.” Regarding this, we checked with John Tuck, Head of the Library Services and the claims made in the group are false – all duplicates of books and old books are not being removed from the shelves. Professor Eaglestone of the English Department very kindly replied to these concerns with a letter that has been posted in the facebook group which clarifies this, so please do check it out if you have any concerns. We can assure you no vital books are being removed, and the small amount of books that are being removed are those deemed to be irrelevant by your departments and are donated to other libraries or recycled (some of them haven't been taken out in over 50 years!).
Last week was also Go Green Week, which meant there were lots of great events going on throughout the week, including a great lecture and debate on where to go now after Copenhagen and a Go Green Meeting on Tuesday evening which I attended. It was a great chance to hear all the great things college are doing to become more ethical and environmentally friendly from the university's Sustainability Officer, including some interesting urinal anecdotes! It was also attended by Ellie, the leader of Royal Holloway's branch of People and Planet, a great group concerned with campaigning for human rights, ethical and environmental issues and Ellie kindly explained all the great work they do and what they're working towards. James Pidgeon also gave us an update on the 10:10 campaign, which is even more relevant now its actually 2010! Probably the most amazing part of the week for me was the amazing bicycle powered blender outside the SU on Tuesday – all you had to was turn up, cycle for a few minutes, powering the blender, which blended the fruit and made you a free smoothie!
Apart from this, I had two 1:2:1s with Charlotte this week and started thinking of ideas to present at the next LUAG regarding how to better the library or secure more funding. I've also started preparing for the Faculty Boards, which I'll be attending one of (unfortunately I can't attend all three as they're all held simultaneously!). That's my week =] hope you all have a good weekend, Hardeep.
