Blog 01/02/2010

So… First blog of 2010! Albeit one month late… Never mind though, apologies to those of you who have been avidly awaiting the next installment in Democratic life of the SU.
First things first – its definitely ELECTION TIME! Nomination packs are in, candidates are nervous, and voting commences on Wednesday… I’m well excited, and best of luck to all the Candidates!
In other news – I have done a fair few things since the beginning of term. Had numerous meetings with James about elections and life in general, I have revised the job description for Democracy Officer and the Democracy Sub-Committee, and been to many Executive Committees, outlining and debating what changes are being made to the structural format of the Constitution and the Union! Very interesting though at times tedious, but to check out all that’s going on, make sure you check out the Union website and get yourself along to the General Meeting tomorrow night.
I’ve been helping out with RAG week which was a great success; standing out in the cold outside the Windsor Building with the Charity Buckets, being a judge on Holloway’s Got Talent where we saw 2 fantastic performances in the final from Matt and Dan Woodruff, with Dan eventually winning the vote for his incredible rendition of John Butler Trio’s Ocean. Insane. And, of course, for those who weren’t in Medicine last Wednesday… David Cummins rubbing baby oil over a very drunk Democracy Officer who was selling himself as a cooking and chauffeuring slave for RAG to raise money, awesome stuff. But despite all the fun and japes, its really important to remember who we’re raising money for, and this year its for Beat Bullying, which is an incredibly worthwhile cause and an invaluable outlet for young kids who want a voice and support when they’re being bullied. I’m got myself trained up as a Senior Cyber Mentor, so can now fully join in the good cause! Charlotte and Emily have done an amazing amount of work promoting this and I’m really happy for them that it went down so successfully. If you want to get involved, then please please please email either of them for more info!
Went on a Hockey Umpiring qualification course tonight, and been playing a lot of hockey as well… all good fun. ULU cup semi finals, and still top of the league, yes Men’s 1s!
I’m still organizing the ballot box rotas for receiving the election votes, so if you want to get involved then please let me know!
Happy voting – come along to Candidate’s Question Time and find out why YOU should vote for the candidates running to be custodians of YOUR union – your vote always counts.

Happy Hunting everyone

Blog 1st December

HAPPY 1st DECEMBER EVERYONE!

Its getting so cold but its almost Christmas which is always exciting.

I’ve been reviewing Regulation B (still – it’s a huge piece of paperwork) and other general busy bits. There’s the General Meeting on tonight so I’ll be on the Steering Desk for that so everyone make sure you get down to MLT in Founders to check out what’s going on in your union and what changes are happening!

Hope everyone’s having a good week, speak to you soon!

Blog 24/11/09

Hi everyone

Its been a busy week of work and hockey and whatnot, but I’ve also been having a look at how we can update Regulation B of the Constitution (the one regarding Elections!) so that we can have a more fluid, efficient and exciting election in the upcoming academic year… like the Sabb Elections next term!

Hope to see EVERYONE in Windsor Auditorium tonight for the big launch of Are We The Age Of Stupid? feature film and also the 10:10 campaign… Check out Shivani & Alice’s blogs for more info!

Anything you want to talk about or just wonder what I’m doing and how its affecting you, just drop me an email and I’d be more than happy to chat to you!

17th November

Hello Holloway,

Apologies for the lethargy in blogging – essays won the fight for my undying love and attention last week, but now they’re all done and dusted, and none of the (yet) failed so all’s good.

MY WEEK… has been pretty quiet actually. Sorry to disappoint you avid readers, but nothing too frantic in the world of Democracy has been happening – though Scrutiny and Accountability Sub-Committee was very good, going through and checking all elected officers’ manifestoes and blogs compared to their constitutional duties. Covie is now becoming permanent Chair of the S&A Sub-committee, seeing as she did such a wonderful job chairing her first ever meeting, and she’s ideal to keep all of us in check.

Other than that, I had 2 helpers from the Ents Sub-Committee helping me out on the Steering Desk at the GM last Tuesday, who were awesome, and we elected the RAG Rep onto the SAC so the SAC is now complete again. Awesome.

I’m in the process of reviewing Regulation B of the Union Constitution, which is the section related to Union Election procedure… We’re trying to make the whole understanding of the Regulation more coherent and efficient, but will let you know more when I’ve finished going through it with a fine tooth comb!

Other than that, I’ve been organizing the RHUL Hockey Club Christmas Dinner, and playing a fair old amount of hockey as well. Always good fun. That’s everything for now, catch up again next week!

12th October 2009
Hello hello hello!
Finally managed to get my first blog up, so here it goes… Hope you’ve all been behaving well and turning up to lectures as well as coming to the Union frequently for AWESOME nights like Operation Entertainment!
My week has been filled with thinking about, among other things, the upcoming Elections for 1st Year Rep, NUS Delegates, and of course RAG Vice-Chair.. All the nomination packs are in, and we’re meeting with the candidates tonight (along with my wonderful newly elected Democracy Sub-Committee – yes, it is as exciting as it sounds), and then its time for Cross-Campus elections from Wednesday onwards.
These elections are another chance for you guys to get a say in who represents your views in the Union, especially the 1st Year rep – Freshers, it’s a great chance to get yourselves heard so make sure you come along to Candidate’s Question Time on Thursday night and that you cast your vote when you’re wandering around Campus, or indeed when you’re in KW or Founder’s Dining Hall in the evening…
Its going to be a busy with everyone trying to get their viewpoints across to you and convince you that their the right candidate for YOU, so get embrace it, and get involved with your union…
Other than that, I’ve been playing Hockey, briefly flirting with my Latin and English course before enjoying a few cheeky G&Ts – expect to see us with a more than a few G&Ts and drinks at the Election Results party in Medicine on Tuesday 20th October…

If you’ve got any questions about elections or anything at all about the Union, drop me your thoughts at democracy@su.rhul.ac.uk or come find me for a chat around campus sometime… Have a good week kids.
