12th January 2010

HAPPY NEW YEAR! So we’ve made it through term 1 and we’ve started on term 2 (a snowy but fine start I should add!). Other than having a break I have been doing lots since I’ve returned…

I’ve had a lot of input to the strategic planning of the new Royal Holloway website which has been really good. I sit on a steering group with loads of College officials and we talk about how the website will pan out. Currently it’s just in the early stages of wire frames and web mapping, but we’re getting there – and students ARE being listened to which is awesome!

As Elections loom for Sabbatical positions (that time of year ALREADY!) I’ve been working with James on the publicity and marketing of the Elections. As the General Meeting is so soon (tonight) after term we also prepared publicity and marketing for that as it will include potential changes to the Sabbatical roles, which means we need your input! Come along… Also with James I’ve been doing some work on the BIG Student Debate, coming your way on the 19th January. Check out the event on facebook for more details and start debating your views on what’s happening on campus, in academia, the Union and so on…

Last week I was out helping some of our visiting International Students return through the snow – and I want to take this occasion to formally welcome you all to Royal Holloway! James and I gave a speech about the Students’ Union during the welcome introduction, and it was great to see everyone! Get involved!

I’ve been helping Emma with arrangements for her Society Showcase on 18th January. It gives everyone another chance to check out societies, see what’s going on with their terms so far and join them! Come along on that day, or email Em for more details at vpsa@su.rhul.ac.uk

In other news Alice and I came to the end of Sound Impact! Now we’re waiting for feedback on our completed workbook and the second we know what we’ve been accredited we’ll let you know! In the meantime we’re planning for Go Green Week which will be coming your way in February, and we’re also working on promotional materials for what the Union is doing to be more ethically and environmentally responsible. Also, I think Alice has some campaigns up her sleeve that you’ll see shortly…so keep your eyes peeled on Ethics and Environment at SURHUL…

Jess and I will be working together over this week on where we’re going next with Operation Entertainment, the next one coming on 19th February. If you have anything to say about our Entertainments then please don’t hesitate to contact me at vpcomserv@su.rhul.ac.uk or Jess at entertainments@su.rhul.ac.uk . Also keep an eye out this month for the £5 Ticket Breakdown. To continue our pledge to transparency throughout the organisation we wanted to be as clear as possible and tell you where your £5 goes on your ticket price. Check it out on the back of this What’s On Guide (out now in the Students’ Union) or on the front of the building.

If you have any questions about anything I’ve said here then please feel free to drop me an email, or even better drop by. I’m always available to have a chat, I’m located next to the Box Office in the Students’ Union building.

Byeeee x

16th November 2009

Hello!

Me again, right, I’m just going to tell you everything I’ve been doing and make it sound as interesting as possible. I’ve been watching a lot of Brothers and Sisters and spent the weekend watching films, so sorry if I get overly melo dramatic.

Commercial Services:
In the world of Entertainments we have now finished compiling the responses of our first Operation Entertainment feedback session and we’ve already moved onto the next session. Friday 13th saw a follow up to our 9th October launch and we’ve already been aiming to improve your Entertainments. The newest What’s On Guide (the Christmas one) looks like the best yet, not only with design, but also the events that are coming up, including the first term highlight, the Christmas Blowout, and a Full Moon Party (this year a toga party). So get heavily involved over the last few weeks of term! A hug thank you to Jess Nevin and the Entertainments Sub Committee who have been AMAZING with Operation Entertainment, and hope everyone had an awesome time at Hollywood Glamour (I don’t remember much so it must have been good).

Communications:
Paul Wrench, the Media and Communications Sub Committee have been doing a lot of work to progress in the world of Communications. The poster board policy is going to the Executive Committee tomorrow and we’re hoping it will pass and then go to the next General Meeting where YOU can vote for it to go through. Basically we’ve tidied it up a lot and made it a lot more Union friendly, which it perhaps hasn’t been in the past. New projects are also in the works…so continue to keep an eye out for more to come!

Paul and I have also been working with Shivani Singh, James Pidgeon and Alice Redfern to communicate the launch of the Union’s involvement with 10:10 and our launch event, a showing of the Age of Stupid, which will be next Tuesday (24th November).

Media:
As my last blog said, the world of media is looking to expand into broader horizons with the hopeful implementation of TWO new media outlets… We’re working hard to make sure these ideas are not just thrown away in the wind, so we’re taking both new initiatives very slowly to make it right, but as I said, keep your eyes peeled for new information as and when we get it!

Ethics and Environment:
It’s all go go go in this department! Alice Redfern and me have been meeting to get ourselves through Sound Impact, the NUS accreditation scheme set in place to ensure Students’ Union all over the country are actively working towards a more ethical and environmental work place. In other news we’ve also been planning Go Green Week, coming your way in February, and have also been working on the 10:10 Campaign, with Shivani, Paul and James.

That’s all for now, thank you for your time!

Stay tuned for more exciting adventures in the world of Cummins…

24th October 2009

Hi there!

It’s taken me such a long time to blog as I’ve been such a busy bumblebee! Uh oh! However, here I am now…!

The past few weeks have been hectic dealing with the come down from Freshers’ Week, and since it’s been all go go go! The four Sabbs and several Exec members have been representing you at the Student Experience Working Groups where we are working closely with Maire Davies to make your experience here better across the board. The whole Working Group are hoping for improvements for students to be implemented over the next year towards a better environment for everyone.

Elsewhere one of my biggest projects has been working with Jess Nevin and the Entertainments Committee on Operation Entertainment, our student feedback initiative designed to put you in the loop on the Entertainments at the Students’ Union. The results are being compiled as we speak and will be with you shortly… I can announce that the theme night you voted for to take place on 13th November will be… Hollywood Glamour! See you then…!

I have also been meeting with Alice Redfern and the Ethics and Environment Committee and we’ve been thinking of new initiatives to develop towards creating a more sustainable environment throughout the Union and the campus at large. Alice and I have been working out criteria for Sound Impact also, of which the deadline is fairly soon. Sound Impact is an accreditation scheme which ranks Unions over the country within the brackets, “Working Towards”, “Bronze”, “Silver” and “Gold”. Last year SURHUL was accredited as a Silver Union…but this year we want GOLD!!! If you have any ideas on how to help us then get in touch…

For Communications this past few weeks I have been working hard on advertising Elections with James, and generally supporting various other officers throughout the Union. I have met with Paul Wrench a number of times and we’ve been looking to develop the media section of the Union…so keep your eyes peeled for innovative changes! We’ve also been looking at the poster board policy.

Re-working the Marketing Strategy has also been a work in progress lately, as well as interviews for new staff members in the Commercial department. I have attended various senates and sub committees meetings also, alongside many disciplinaries…

There you go, that will be it from me for now, tune back in next week for more information on what I’ve been getting up to…

3 words…

David

(P.S. Bought Alexandra Burke and Cheryl’s albums over the weekend. O. M. F. G. !!!)

30th September 2009
Hello there!

Now that Freshers’ Week has settled down and we’ve started to unwind in the comfort of our own (hectic) offices and you’ve become (grudgingly) used to your new timetable, I am taking my first opportunity to sit down and write my blog. So here it is!

Having a long and lovely summer planning your Freshers’ Week and all the production that went with it, I hope you thoroughly enjoyed every minute of it! This has been my best Freshers’ Week so far and it was amazing to see so many of you having a good time during the day and then in the evening. It’s also nice to have been joined you after all this time! I had been one of about three people living in Gowar until you all turned up… I hope your move in wasn’t too stressful or nerve racking.

This week I have been getting to grips of being in the role with you all here. I have been doing (amongst other things);

Elections publicity (pick up your nomination pack today from reception to run for First Year Representative, RAG Vice Chair or one of four NUS Delegate positions);
Cleaned up the Meeting Room;
Had meetings with each of my Executive Family (I’m waiting for Alice now…);
Sorted out the Poster Boards in the Students’ Union;
Thought about Tommy’s and furniture;
Insanity Annual General Meeting;
Student Experience Working Group Meeting;
Executive Committee Meeting;
Freshers’ Week Wash-Up Meeting;
Audit Meeting;
Reception Cover;
Talking to printers;
Doing little bits of the website;
Checking out the new What’s On Guide;
Planning Operation Entertainment with Jess;
Researched Bill Ruddiman for Alice;
…and got a cold… : ( sad times.

Anyways…! That’s enough from me for now, will get back in touch in a week!
